North Charleston is a unique place.  It is the Lowcountry’s INDUSTRIAL HUB, ground zero for RETAIL COMMERCE and an urban center with a growing population. But it is also a diverse area that includes neighborhoods of HIGH POVERTY and UNENVIABLE CRIME RATES.

Charleston County School District (CCSD) paid the Clemson University Office of Inclusion and Equity $135,000.00 to conduct a six-month STUDY. One of the major recommendations from the study by the Clemson University Office of Inclusion and Equity to CCSD was to ENGAGE COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS (Pages 6, 16, and 17) in the form of creating or identifying a non-profit organization(s) that will coordinate with the district to channel volunteers, funds, and other resources to poor and distressed schools.

LegacyCreators Community Ambassadors:
Mr. Allen's Mission as a Community Ambassador is implemented After School, Weekends, Holidays, during Summer Recess and other time periods when school is NOT in session to Improve the personal and professional brand of North Charleston High School by enhancing its perception, reputation and prominence as a means to increase future enrollment and academic performance.  On Sunday, June 7, 2020, in response to the murder of George Floyd, New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio said, “…the city will hire Community Ambassadors (16:30) who can bring residents’ concerns to “the highest levels of the New York Police Department.”

Weather Ready Ambassadors - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency:
In 2019, Mr. Allen’s students worked with Dr. Merrie Koester, director of Kids Teaching Flood Resilience, a NOAA Weather Ready Nation (WRN) Ambassador program, to develop a PSA, which presented a challenge to GET HURRICANE SMART (GHS), on the Kahoot assessment platform.  This hurricane literacy test featured questions vetted for their importance by the National Weather Service and City Emergency Management Directors.  In 2020, the Storm Surge Report from CoreLogic listed two cities in South Carolina, Charleston and Myrtle Beach, that were vulnerable to heavy damage if there was a catastrophic storm surge during a hurricane.

For this effort, Mr. Allen and his students were awarded a WRN Certificate.  A
Project Impact grant supported the making of the PSA.  In March, Mr. Allen, Dr. Koester, and Ms. Katie Faith, Director of Charleston County Project Impact, presented the GET HURRICANE SMART Tool at the annual conference of South Carolina Association of Hazard Mitigation.  This partnership with KTFR represents a community team effort to mitigate hurricane hazards in vulnerable communities.

Community Collaboration - High School Sports in Affluent Communities - Must "See It" in order to "Be It"!
The challenges associated with socio-economically challenged Title I elementary, middle and high schools extend well beyond the high level of poverty and underperforming standardized test scores that systematically lead to a disproportionate percentage of students who do not earn their high school diploma. The underlying statistics that are inconsistently reported as a direct correlation of the information above is the level of dysfunctional and extreme violent behavior in the school learning environment and the community as a whole.

The Charleston County School District (CCSD) consists of approximately 20 schools that offer a middle school curriculum in grades 6th, 7th and 8th.  CCSD only has one Alternative School, Liberty Hill Academy, for its middle school students.  It is estimated that on any date up to 30% of the students attending the Liberty Hill Academy Alternative School, their original home school is Morningside Middle School.

One of the goals of the LegacyCreators Web Development Team that directly impacts the mission of the organization is the exposure of students to a world outside of their own by attending high school football and basketball events in select Charleston metropolitan area affluent communities such as Mount Pleasant, James Island and Cane Bay.

The successful outcomes from these Community Collaboration high school football and basketball games have been nothing short of an astounding success for the students who regularly attend and the students who "want to someday earn a spot on the bus."

Community - Grass Roots Promotion of Entrepreneurship is one of the Means to Break the Cycle of Poverty

Entrepreneurship will be one of the three courses that Mr. Allen will teach during the 2020-2021 academic year at North Charleston High School.  Mr. Allen made the decision to become an entrepreneur in 1993 when he Co-Founded the IBM Business Partner, Total Solutions Group, after resigning from the IBM Corporation after eight years of service as a Marketing Representative and a Product Manager.

Mr. Allen is a Social Entrepreneur is his founding and leadership of LegacyCreators, which is a 100% self-funded community based non-profit organization. LegacyCreators has never received funding from the Charleston County School District.  A student, parent or guardian has never incurred an out of pocket cost to participate in the multitude of After School, Weekends, Holidays, during the Summer and when school is NOT in session events sponsored by LegacyCreators in the form of field trips, community collaboration events, college road trips, Koats for Kids, back to school clothes or high school football and basketball athletic games.

One of the learning outcomes that LegacyCreators would like for s
ocio-economically challenged students attending Title I Schools is to integrate Entrepreneurship and Innovation into their life long learning.  Entrepreneurship and Innovation are the means by which themselves and their families will be able to create a model for social, economic and political empowerment.

A student's acquisition of secondary and post-secondary education along with the spirit of entrepreneurship, even if they are employed by an organization, will be the means by which they will learn how to continually reinvent themselves and their families!

Giving Back to the Community - Back to School Clothes and Koats for Kids, Clothes That Kids Want to Wear!
The Basic Needs of students and their families are defined as food, clothing and shelter.  For the families of students that LegacyCreators serves, South Carolina and the Federal Government provide intervention in the form of Shelter (Section 8 housing vouchers and low income housing) and Food (i.e. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP in addition to free breakfast and free lunch at school).

The Basic Needs of students that often go un/under satisfied is Clothing.  During any given month a school, church or community agency will host a clothing or coat give away.  The challenge is that donors of clothing and coats refuse to recognize the pressure high poverty students have in not just wearing clothing or a coat, but the clothing must be cool, acceptable to wear and free from Bullying Ridicule.
